THE BEACON WINS FOUR NATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARDS AT CATHOLIC MEDIA CONVOCATION

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Beacon was awarded four journalism awards - three for first place and one for second place - at the 2006 Catholic Media Convocation held here May 24-26.

The National Right to Life's Excellence in Journalism Award is given to one newspaper in the country to recognize outstanding journalism in the interest of the most vulnerable among us - the unborn, the elderly and people with disabilities. Its
2006 award went to the Beacon and Michael Wojcik for his story, "Notre Dame Parishioner is Strident Advocate for Rights of the Disabled." It told the story of Dawn Parkot, whose mother was told her child had disabilities and be nothing more than "a vegetable." Yet, despite her disabilities, Parkot was graduated from the University of Notre Dame, earned a graduate degree there and tours the state speaking out for the rights of the disabled...
